Hi,
The UO Center for Media and Educational Technologies: Interactive Media is looking to hire a talented student web designer starting Winter term. The student must be proficient in XTHML and CSS. Flash and/or ActionScript would be a big plus. Could I advertise this position through your group? It's the perfect fit for someone interested in gaining some real-world experience (as much as the University can be "real-world"). I have a position description that I can send with more information if this seems appropriate.
Thanks,
Kirstin

Download the Havok bundle now <http://www.intelsoftwaregraphics.com/?lid=1959&cid=487&pid=469&mid=Q5W5fjgHz7k=&ch=e> and see what a difference core physics software can make.

Subject: graphic designer needed
Job Announcement:
We are looking for a student to design four promotional materials for the
Sexual Wellness Advocacy Team (SWAT) and for Sexual Violence Prevention &
Education. We need a poster design, two different "postcard" designs, and a
pamphlet with resources and information.
We are willing to discuss pay with a student, but last year the student who

again. We want the promotional materials completed by the end of fall term
at the latest- to be started right away!
Are any talented students interested? Please email me at asapgtf@uoregon.edu

For Tomorrows meeting we are going to talk some more about posters and website and I will be gathering a list of resources you can go to to help get you started. There is only 1 week left for the poster (no deadline for the website yet) and so far there are no submissions so get working on this and make a great portfolio piece and help ASDA at the same time.
Also on the table is machine project. I'm still going for Papercraft Professors as the best idea so far. I have some templates for the boxes printed out so we can brainstorm ideas.
There is also another job that I will be talking about it looks like a website update with a little graphics work.
PODS is also planning a Student Groups Fair what we should be a part of if anyone wants to be a part of that let me know.
Last on the list is setting dates and times for the first photo night and getting a list of volunteers.
See you at the meeting tomorrow.

1. ASDA needs some new posters they should be 11x7 with .25 margin all around.
if you want to do a poster but don't quite know where to start you can take a look at
psdtuts.com
vectuts.com
bittbox.com
gomediazine.com
notcot.com
these site have a lot of inspiring pieces and free design tools ect to help you get started.
2. ASDA also needs a new website. The new website will most likely be powered by wordpress (wordpress.org) you can check there for themes that other designers have made for it.
What we are looking for is a Photoshop mock up of how you think the web page should look once it is finished. The site should be 960px with a main content area sidebar header and footer areas.
you can find some tutorials for mocking up websites in photoshop at psdtuts.com you can find other inspiration and resources at bittbox.com and gomediazone.com. you can look at other well designed pages at favup.com
3. ASDA is considering making merchandise to sell the machine project. some initial ideas include papercraft professors, good/bad karma cards, and limited edition posters. If you have other idea you would like to include just send me an email (asda@uoregon.edu) and we can talk about it at the next meeting.
4. Photo night where students can bring in work to get photographed by ASDA students is another project we want to get underway. we will need posters for this as well as volunteers to manage projects, take photos transfer photos and give people a rundown on how to use the photos.
we are thinking about doing these nights on a regular basic what do you think is best?
5. Louie has a web design job for us for Adaptive Sports Club/Accessibility Student Union
ASDA Design Firm,
I met with the student coordinator for the Adaptive Sports Club, and
leader of the Accessibility Student Union tonight. He is interested in
getting a website up to represent both groups, and looking for someone
to build the sites. Would be a great opportunity for someone to add to
their portfolio, and add a great line to their resume. I do not know
if this would be a paying gig or not.
The contact for this job is Eli Ettinger, eettinge@uoregon.edu
Hope to see you at the meeting tomorrow.
-Louie

We need a AAA student to help us out! It's kind of timely because this project needs to be done by the Grand Opening October 1st.
What we're doing is creating a display piece (3 panel – life size) to kind of illustrate the history of the White Stag Block and to entice potential donors for the naming campaign. We have a recent art history graduate working with us. We would like a student to help with the graphics, etc. We plan to compensate them as well. It can be a student in Eugene because the work can be sent digitally.

I am looking to hire a UO student as soon as possible with graphics
design skills to do the layout for a 15 page sustainable food
resource guide. Our text, graphics, and photos will be ready on
Friday, March 21. We have an example of another report we'd like to
model our guide after which I can show to interested students.
I expect the project will require 20 - 30 hours of work and it pays
$10/hr. This could be a neat spring break employment opportunity.
Interested students should contact me by email at smital@uoregon.edu
as soon as possible and send me examples of past work similar in scale.

> Hi. We're journalism students, and we're making a film. We have a
certain scene that requires some drawings. Our original artist bailed
on the project at the last minute, and now we're looking for someone
to fill that void. If there are any art students who can illustrate,
we'd love to hear from you. The drawings would be of a fight scene,
namely things we can't do in real life (e.g. an arm breaking, a foot
crashing into a face, etc.) We're looking for realistic body
proportions, but the violence can be stylish. We can talk more about
this part if you are interested.
>
> I have still images taken from the video we shot for the artist to
work from. I know it's the end of the term, and so payment for these
drawings is definitely an option. Also, your work would be screened
this Wednesday when we screen the film. We're also talking about
entering the film into a festival or two.

For those who are thinking about going to the Career Symposium, here is a chance to say what you would like to see there. I highly recommend that all of us have a say in this. It is a great way to start networking. I already know of some interesting business that are going to be there. To the Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors, it is a good idea to start early and make connections while you are still is school. Check it out!
Thanks and hope you all are having a good weekend!

Hi all!
So, we have finally written our By-Laws and Constitution. We are going
to need to vote on it next friday before it can go into effect. So,
please come to next weeks meeting (friday at noon in LA 100) or send
an e-mail our way to let us know what you think. If there is a need to
be annonymous then we can set up an annonymous vote on line. We would
like any feedback you have, so feel free to write or talk to us.
Thanks and I hope to see you all at this weeks meeting!

Tomorrow, Andre Sirois, a local hip hop DJ, will talk about the
copyright issues surrounding creating derivative works, and borrowing
other people's works when creating your own. It should be an
interesting talk! It is important to know what is allowed and what is
not allowed when using someone else's work. It's also good to know
what steps you can take to ensure your work is used appropriately.
The talk is at our regular meeting time and place. Lawrence room 100,
12:00-1:00.
We hope to see you there!

Tomorrow we have a guest speaker from the ePortfolio program coming in
to talk to us! She will be telling us about the program and wants some
input on how it could benefit us as digital arts students. Go and
check out the eportfolio project website:
http://eportfolio.uoregon.edu. I encourage you all to come! If enough
people are interested, she can schedule a workshop for our group! See
you there tomorrow!

The back-story on University Day:
Each May, hundreds of UO students, faculty and staff spend the day
cleaning, painting, planting flowers, spreading bark dust, and helping
with other campus beautification projects.
It began in the early 1900's, but died out in the 1920s. Enthusiastic
students got the support of and revived it in 1990. UO students
organize the annual clean-up in cooperation with the university's
Office of Student Life and Facilities Services staff.
Compensation is to be determined. Could be money, class credit or just
15 min of fame. In any case, this will be good for your portfolio.
This is also a good chance to work in a great environment with other
enthusiastic people.
Ideally, you will have web design and coding experience. A must is
that you are self-motivated [aka, can meet deadlines] and want to
enhance your work rather than getting a job.
If you are interested, contact Lee LaTour, llatour@uoregon.edu ASAP
Just a reminder that Craig Hickman is coming to talk this Friday about
cameras and using RAW format. I hope you all can make it!
On another note, if you haven't been down to the Laverne Kraus Gallery
yet I recommend that you do so. There is a great show going on by
fellow students in ASDA. Go check it out!
Thanks all!

Slow Art
http://www.siggraph.org/s2008/submissions/juried/slowart/
In our digital culture, we can task simultaneously, message instantly, and
prototype rapidly, but, in doing so, do we create an oasis for
contemplation, or do we fuel a hunger for yet more speed? As technology
colors all aspects of our world, we see the inevitable pendular response in
campaigns that advocate slowness.
The Italian membership organization Cittaslow's manifesto defines criteria
for slow cities, focusing on improved quality of life. Internationally,
people are organizing to protect regional food systems, traditions, and
cuisine as part of the Slow Food Movement. There is a return to artisanship,
and a renewed focus on the local, as opposed to the global.
Throughout time, artists have pioneered the important task of illustrating
and preserving humanity. For the SIGGRAPH 2008 art program, we are seeking
art and investigations that address our overarching conference themes
(Complexity and Accessibility, Future History, Global Responsibility, Impact
on Society, and Professional Development and Education) through the filter
of Slowness. Some questions we hope to explore are:
* In which ways do new media artists employ the tools of speed to address
the issue of slowness?
* How does the speed afforded by technology affect the work we make?
* With the rapid changes in new media, how will these artworks be preserved,
and do questions of legacy affect the creative process?
* How can new media art assist in the preservation of cultural diversity?
All submissions will be juried. International works are highly encouraged.
All forms of digitally mediated work are eligible, as well as works made in
traditional media that comment on technology. Selections will be made
according to the following criteria: relevance to the SIGGRAPH 2008 themes,
creative use of media, depth of critical exploration, and quality of
accompanying artist statement.
Our final exhibition will be a gallery at SIGGRAPH 2008, smaller than in
past years. In addition, there will be an exhibition of curated artworks.
Through both of these exhibits, we hope to showcase the strongest examples
of current new media work.

I just got an email from Jenny that said they'll be taking down this
week's show today. Any one of us who is showing can start to set up
today after six p.m. You by no means have to start today; the gallery
is open Saturday and Sunday (though I wouldn't leave it all until
Sunday).
See you this weekend
-Simon Boas
I just got this from Jenny Kroik, who manages the Laverne Krause
Gallery. If anyone would have a problem waiting until Saturday to set
up, let me know.
Thanks,
Simon

I hope everyone had a good break! Aaron, Karl, and I wanted to say
thank you for all your participation last term and that we are excited
for the on coming term. We have a few great guest lecturers lined up
and several jobs for the Design Firm. Just a few notes:
1) We will be meeting in the same place at the same time. (Fridays at
noon in room 100 LA)
2) There will be a meeting this Friday.
3) For those who are interested in the Gallery show this term- You
are required to attend a MANDATORY meeting on Wednesday, January
9, at 6.15 p.m. in the drawing room behind the Art office (198 LA),
where an exhibition packet and brief overview of the gallery will be
provided. You will also be REQUIRED to sign a contract for your show
at this meeting.
I think that is it. If there are any questions, comments, or concerns,
feel free to e-mail us. I look forward to seeing you all again!

PS. If anyone has poster designs, please bring it up in meeting this Friday.
